This site has been wholly revised from Joel E. Correia's personal site to highlight the work and community behind the research group. If you've visited before, you'll notice things look very different.
Why FRONTERAS?
The name says it all, if you know how to read it.
Fronteras is the Spanish word for frontiers and borders, and it speaks directly to where and how we work. The FRONTERAS Collective focuses on forest frontiers: the contested edges of the Amazon and Gran Chaco where extractive industries, climate change, and expanding infrastructure shape the futures of these social-ecological systems as well as the territories of Indigenous Peoples, "local communities," Afro-descendant peoples, campesino/as, and other territorially-based communities that call them home. These frontiers are not the periphery. They are the frontlines of some of the most urgent social-environmental struggles of our time. What happens in these places has far-reaching implications.
But FRONTERAS is also an acronym, where each letter maps a core research focus, commitment, and interest: Forest frontiers, Rights, pOlitical ecologies, Natures, Transdisciplinarity, Extractivism, Relationality, the Américas, and Stewardship. Together, these concepts and processes form a framework, a set of values, and intellectual inspiration for our respective and collective work.
